Singin' in the Rain

My grandmother loved to watch old movies, particularly musicals, with my sisters and I when we were young.  Because of this, I have a soft spot in my heart for many of the old movies that many people my age dismiss.  There was a simple joy in these movies that is not often seen in the cinema of today.  Some classics withstand the passage of time, there is something about Gene Kelly dancing while singing "Singin' in the Rain" that always puts a smile on my face.

I am not necessarily particularly fond of clichés like "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade;" however, in some ways this song is the epitome of making the best of a rainy day, while it also is something a little bit deeper.  Gene Kelly's character is so incredibly happy at the moment, not even a torrential downpour can dampen his "glorious feeling" for he is "laughing at clouds.”  While the lyrics are simple and perhaps arguably silly, as with most music, the lyrics are not entirely trivial.

Our lives are so often filled with that which is dark, dreary, and heavy.  Heavy rain at night may frequently be used as symbolism for these types of burdens, but sometimes even amidst the hard aspects of day-to-day life, there are bright spots.  If we do not let the rain dampen our spirits, we can find true happiness in the good things that happen, even if they are occurring in tandem with trials and daily tedium.  While the current trials of the COVID-19 pandemic often make it hard to remember that there will be sunshine after this storm, listening to this song reminds that even admits the current downpour of difficulties the sun does come shining through and there are still reasons to smile.  I think it is important to remember that not only is there no shame in savoring happiness when we find it, and that when life becomes difficult it is even more important to find joy in life's simple pleasures.

Whenever something makes me think of this song I will undoubtedly be found singing, humming, or whistling its tune, while picturing myself lifting my feet in a bell kick, as I would often randomly do during my dancing days, with "a happy refrain," because “the sun’s in my heart.”  Although I may envy the childlike pleasure Gene Kelly imparts while stomping and jumping in rain puddles, my propensity to easily catch a chill typically has me running to get out of the rain.  However, sometimes Seattle’s weather leaves me no choice, but to spend a little time in the rain.  Whether I spend that time singing or griping depends on the day.  Regardless, the fact that VOCSN is water resistant ensures that I could spend a Seattle day “Singin’ in the Rain.”
