Lessons from The Lord of the Rings

This does not mean that I do not get sad, frustrated, or even angry, but finding happiness in life is a choice, not a consequence of one’s circumstances.

I do not like it when people feel like they cannot tell me about their problems because I "have so much to deal with.” I do not think this is true, or fair. Everyone has things they have to deal with. They are just different things. Regardless of whether or not they are overtly apparent to an outsider looking in does not make my problems more important than anyone else's.

Dealing with the challenges life has given me is not really about the challenges, but rather about the choices I make. J.R.R. Tolkien captures this better in The Lord of the Rings. On his journey to Rivendell, Frodo says, “I wish it need not have happened in my time.”

“So do I," replies Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that has been given to us.”

There is a far deeper meaning than I will discuss at present, but since my accident I have attempted to live my life with this in mind. And upon reflection, I have lived a very full life.

Each day, I choose to make the most of the time that I have because I may not have as much time as most. This does not mean that I do not get sad, frustrated, or even angry, but finding happiness in life is a choice, not a consequence of one’s circumstances. To be completely honest, I cannot even regret the bad things that have happened to me, or wish it away as Frodo did, because I have come to my present as a result of everything that has happened in my past.

I have met many incredible people and done amazing things as a direct result of my accident. Without the bad, I would have missed out on so much more good. I have become a better person and lived a better life because of all that has come to pass.
